ACCESSIBILITY

The Museum at Eldridge Street is committed to ensuring our visitors can readily access the information and services we provide, both on-site and on our website. Guests are welcome to request accommodations at least two weeks ahead of their planned visit by emailing contact@eldridgestreet.org or calling 212.219.0302.

 

Getting to the Museum

 

By Subway

The nearest accessible subway station to the Museum is the 6 train at the Canal Street Station.

 

By Bus

The Museum is closest to the M15 (ALLEN ST/GRAND ST) and M15 - SBS (Select Bus Service) (HESTER ST/ALLEN ST) buses.

 

By Taxi or Access-A-Ride Paratransit Service

To reach the Museum via taxi or Access-A-Ride, you can provide them with our address: 12 Eldridge Street, New York, NY, 10002. 

Building Access

 

All four levels of the Museum at Eldridge Street are fully accessible by ramp and elevator.

On-Site Resources

 

Admission

The Museum offers complimentary general admission to individuals with federally recognized disabilities and one caregiver. 

Seating 

Visitors are welcome to use the various benches located throughout the Museum on all levels. Given that these benches are historic objects, we ask that they be used with care. The Museum is also happy to provide folding chairs in the gallery spaces upon request. 

 

Restrooms

Public restrooms and a water fountain are available on the lower level (LL). If using the elevator, make a left as you exit, and the restrooms will be on your right. All restrooms include an accessible stall.

 

Service Animals

The Museum welcomes service animals that are trained to perform tasks for the benefit of individuals with disabilities. 

 

Sensory Kits

The Museum has sensory kits available for visitors to use. Please ask a member of staff or the front desk for assistance. 

 

Cool Down Space

The Museum has a designated cool-down space for visitors with autism, who are neurodiverse, or have other disabilities, available on the Museum’s Entrance level (press button 1F in the elevator). Please ask a member of staff or a staff member at the Front Desk for assistance.

Sensory Guide

The Museum’s Sensory Guide describes the four levels of our Museum, focusing on highlights and features found on each level. It denotes the standard audio level and guidelines for touching. Similarly, the audio levels referenced in this guide may change during tours, lectures, concerts, or other events.  
 

Online Videos 

The Museum posts many past programs on its YouTube channel and includes closed captioning. 

 

Museum Website and Widget

The Museum uses UserWay for compliance with the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, Level “A1” (“WCAG-2.1 AA”), a set of guidelines adopted by a private group designed to maximize accessibility of web content.

 

As part of this compliance, our website features the UserWay widget, which enables users to customize the text, font, line spacing, contrast, images, and other elements of our website, facilitating easier reading and comprehension for individuals with visual or learning impairments. The widget can be opened by clicking the button that reads “Accessibility” in the bottom left corner of your screen.

Tour and On-site Program Resources

 

Self-Guided Tours

Our digital Self-Guided Tour, available via Bloomberg Connects, is offered in multiple languages. You can access this digital tour here. The Bloomberg Connects platform integrates with assistive technology assistive technologies including screen readers, alt text, text scaling and contrast, audio and video transcripts, and more. 

 

We also offer printed copies of the Museum self-guided tour in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Hebrew, Portuguese, Spanish, Braille, and large format (English). For assistance accessing one of these guides, please ask at the admissions desk upon your arrival at the Museum.

 

Private Tours and Experiences 

Museum educators offer a range of guided visits for individuals and groups with special needs. To book a tour, please fill out our Group Reservation Form.

 

Private verbal description and other accessibility tours are available with two weeks’ notice, subject to availability. For more information, please call 212.219.0302, extension 305, or email access@eldridgestreet.org

 

In-Person Programs

For public programs, the Museum reserves accessible seating with additional leg room. The Museum can also connect our sound system to hearing aids and other Bluetooth devices during concerts, lectures, and other public programs.
