SUMMARY:Who is a Woman of Valor?
DESCRIPTION:Adult Education\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to be a woman of valor? A Hebrew verse cites virtue\, but over centuries the definition has been applied to women who are trailblazers\, advocates\, unflinching and unstoppable. This four-session course\, led by expert guide and educator Barry Feldman\, will explore the history of the women who get things done. In guided discussions with Barry and your classmates\, you’ll fly through time from women in the Bible\, to colonial Americans\, to the activists 100 years ago who secured women’s right to vote. At the end of foursessions\, you will have explored the creativity\, energy\, and contributions of Jewish and American women in labor\, science\, justice\, and literature. You’ll even have a chance to spend a class discussing your own suggestions for women of valor. This course celebrates the centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage. \n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:East Side Stories
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Walking Tour\n\n\n\nWe’re breaking away from our landmark building for these special Saturday tours led by museum docent Richard Soden! You’ll stroll through the neighborhood as Soden weaves 100-year-old history with the street smarts he’s earned as a long-time Lower East Side resident. Learn about what life was like for Jewish immigrants at the turn of the last century\, where children played\, where people shopped and ate\, how they received news\, and even where they banked. You’ll also explore more recent history\, including how the neighborhood has been transformed and adapted to new trends and cultures in the 21st century. \n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Make it Green!
DESCRIPTION:Family Program\n\n\n\nIt’s been generations since the Lower East Side was farmland. Even by the early 1900s\, the Jewish immigrants who settled in the neighborhood were surrounded by far more tenements than trees. In honor of Earth Dayand the importance of glimpsing the natural world in the big city\, join us for this special craft program that will help you make your own world more leafy and green. Presented in partnership with PJ Library. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Medieval Jewish Thinkers in Their Historical Contexts II
DESCRIPTION:Adult Education\n\n\n\nMaimonides was the most important and most studied medieval Jewish philosopher\, yet we still argue over what he really believed. How should we understand God? Do people have free will? Why is there evil in the world? What is the role of the Messiah? Will the dead be resurrected? Why should Jews observe halakha (Jewish law)? This course will explore the writings of Maimonides and compare his views on these questions to those of his predecessors including Saadia Gaon and Judah Halevi as well as the larger multi-religious society in which he lived and worked. \n \nDr. Regina Stein is the Morris Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street. She has taught for Temple Emanu-El’s Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning\, the Wexner Heritage Foundation\, CLAL\, the Jewish Theological Seminary\, the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel\, the Academy for Jewish Religion\, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. Dr. Stein is formerly the National Director of the Hadassah Leadership Academy. \n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Ambition\, Activism\, and Adaptation: Jewish Women of the Lower East Side
DESCRIPTION:Adult Education\n\n\n\nYoung immigrant women at the turn-of-the-20th century were often pulled between old and new worlds\, gender expectations and evolving ways of life. How were young\, single women able to navigate their new environment? This six-session course will examine the lives of the many Jewish women who arrived on the Lower East Side between 1870-1914. Through memoirs\, letters and other historical material\, you will explore the nature of life for Jewish women in Eastern Europe\, the changes they faced after immigration\, their work\, family life and cultural adjustments. Participants will have a chance to share their own family’s cultural artifacts that may be used to deepen our understanding of this topic. \nMay 20th’s session will include a special guided tour of Henry Street Settlement\, to learn about women who led the downtown movement toward social justice and public health. \nLucy Shahar is a retired intercultural facilitator and consultant. She has worked extensively with immigrants\, focusing on understanding and dealing with the cultural differences they encounter. Lucy has also taught US History\, with an emphasis on immigration. \n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Women of Valor\, Today
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion\n\n\n\nOur history is full of strong\, accomplished women who are remembered for their tenacity and their influence in our culture – Frances Perkins\, who dedicated her career to securing labor protections after witnessing the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire; suffragettes who marched in the streets until they won the right to vote in America; Esther\, whose cunning ways saved her people. But who are today’s women of valor? What are the issues in 2020 that bring women into the streets to march and make change? This program\, an accompaniment to the Women of Valor education course\, will explore those questions with an accomplished panel including Mignonette Chiu\, a Hunter professor who specializes in immigration\, transnational feminism\, and global studies; and Rabbi Amy Bolton\, a Spiritual Care Counselor for Visiting Nurse Services of New York and a member of the Clergy Task Force. \n \n\n\n\n

This course will explore the writings of Maimonides and compare his views on these questions to those of his predecessors including Saadia Gaon and Judah Halevi as well as the larger multi-religious society in which he lived and worked. \n \nDr. Regina Stein is the Morris Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street.

SUMMARY:Yiddishe Mamas Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Yiddishe Mamas Walking Tour\n\n\n\nCelebrate the women who made the world go ‘round on this special brunch and tour! The morning starts with a nosh and mimosa spread in the gleaming women’s balcony of our historic sanctuary – the perfect vantage point to learn about the 2010 stained glass window\, whose design\, by artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans\, used state-of-the-art technology to breathe new life into an old building. Then\, we’ll hit the streets of the Lower East Side to follow in the footsteps of pious women and prostitutes\, activists and artists\, freethinking feminists and tough-talking balabustas. Hear about anarchist Emma Goldman; Visiting Nurse Service founder Lillian Wald; wigmaker and mikvah owner Gittel Natelson; delicatessen queen Sarah Gellis; and the Henry Street Settlement\, where young mothers took their children to the city’s first off-street playground. \n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:From Freedom to Slavery and Back Again: The Biblical Book of Exodus
DESCRIPTION:Adult Education\n\n\n\nThe exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt is the most important event in the Bible\, and it became a powerful model for other liberation narratives. No previous knowledge of Hebrew or of the Bible is required.
