STEVE MARCUS: TOP DOG OF KOSHER POP ART

May 12, 2022 – November 6, 2022

Michael Weinstein Gallery

New York city artist Steve Marcus took viewers on a journey into the cartoon world of kosher folk art through a series of new artworks inspired by one of the many great Jewish contributions to American culture: the hot dog. Linking his quirky sense of humor with a passion for his own roots and culture, Marcus’s hand-drawn works on paper answer to a higher authority. In addition, the exhibition’s exploration of Jewish life and immigrant culture included a hand-carved wooden sculpture and selections from the artist’s personal collection of New York City hot dog memorabilia.

Marcus lives and creates his artwork in his studio just a few blocks north of the Museum on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The neighborhood, once the stronghold of the Yiddish theater and other Jewish cultural and religious touchstones, is where has has primarily lived and worked, developing an international reputation over the last 30 years.

During the run of the exhibition, the Museum at Eldridge Street offered a series of related public programs and gallery tours.

This exhibition and related programs are made possible by the City of New York Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council, and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
