STEVE MARCUS: TOP DOG OF KOSHER POP ART

May 12, 2022 – November 6, 2022
Michael Weinstein Gallery

little nathan's dream artwork
A young Nathan Handwerker dreams of his future hot dog empire on the Coney Island boardwalk.

New York City artist Steve Marcus takes viewers on a journey into the cartoon world of kosher folk art through a series of new artworks inspired by one of the many great Jewish contributions to American culture: the hot dog. Linking his quirky sense of humor with a passion for his own roots and culture, Marcus’s hand-drawn works on paper answer to a higher authority.

Marcus lives and creates his artwork in his studio just a few blocks north of the Museum at Eldridge Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The neighborhood, once the stronghold of the Yiddish Theatre and other Jewish cultural and religious touchstones, is where he has primarily lived and worked, developing an international reputation over the last 30 years.

Steve Marcus: Top Dog of Kosher Pop Art explores Jewish life and immigrant culture through works on paper, a wooden sculpture, and selections from Marcus’s personal collection of New York City hot dog memorabilia.

During the run of the exhibition, the Museum at Eldridge Street will offer a series of related public programs, family programs, walking tours, and gallery tours. Please check the Museum’s calendar for updates and information on upcoming programs. For press requests and images, please email contact@eldridgestreet.org.

This exhibition and related programs are made possible by the City of New York Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council, and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
