In recent years family structures have taken on entirely new forms. How do we reinterpret the age-old commandment to Honor Thy Father and Mother in a time of blended families, same-sex parents, and new definitions? Author Marjorie Ingall and Rabbi Danny Nevins consider what it means to honor Patriarchs and Matriarchs today. This program is part of a series exploring the Ten Commandments at Eldridge Street. Presented in partnership with Limmud NY.
Marjorie Ingall is a columnist for Tablet Magazine and the author of Mamaleh Knows Best: What Jewish Mothers Do to Raise Successful, Creative, Empathetic, Independent Children. She’s also a frequent contributor to the New York Times Book Review and has written for many other publications, including Real Simple, Food & Wine, Parents, Ms., New York, Glamour, Self, The Forward (where she was the “East Village Mamele” columnist for seven years), and the late, lamented Sassy, where she was the senior writer and books editor. She’s also a ghostwriter (shh).
Rabbi Danny Nevins is dedicated to exploring the sacred realm of Torah and its intersection with contemporary ethics, culture, and technology. He works at The Jewish Theological Seminary as the Pearl Resnick Dean of the Division of Religious Leadership, encompassing The Rabbinical School, The H.L. Miller Cantorial School, and the Center for Pastoral Education.
