Street Vendor Stories: Pushcarts, Pretzels and Plantains
November 29, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
New Yorkers have been selling food and drink on the streets since the very beginnings of the city. The Lower East Side’s 19th century pushcarts were perhaps the nexus of the tradition, but it lives on today in the hugely popular food trucks drawing new crowds on the sidewalks. Join Eldridge and Cindy VandenBosch of Turnstile Tours for this panel discussion exploring the past and present of New York City street food. Panelists include Jack Beller of Worksman Cycles-800BuyCart, a family-owned business that has been building carts, food trucks, and bicycles for food vendors since 1898; Veronica Julien, owner of the popular Veronica’s Kitchen food cart; Adam Sobel, chef of the award-winning kosher vegan food truck Cinnamon Snail; and Matt Shapiro, attorney and advocate at the Street Vendor Project. VandenBosch’s Turnstile Tours works with the city’s vendor community to offer tours about the street food industry, and she’ll facilitate this discussion with our vendors about the history of the business, modern innovations, and the hustle of vendor life.
