The exhibition opening for Rediscovery, Restoration and Renewal: The Eldridge Street Synagogue in Photographs will take place on Thursday, September 14 from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibition will be on view through March 1, 2018.

Ten years ago, the Museum completed the restoration of the Eldridge Street Synagogue.  In celebration of this milestone, this photography exhibition provides a visual record of that painstaking process.

These haunting photographs capture the rediscovery of the synagogue during its most precarious years. In color and stark black and white, they recall the building’s undeniable poignancy and power even as it was a “rainstorm away from collapse.”  Images of the restoration document the synagogue’s dramatic transformation and the artisans who brought the building back to life.  Drawings and photographs also capture the building’s 21st-century renewal and the installation of a new stained glass window designed by artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans.
