Ambition, Activism and Adaptation: Jewish Women of the Lower East Side

February 19, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

$20.00 - $100.00

Young immigrant women at the turn-of-the-20th century were often pulled between old and new worlds, gender expectations and needs of survival. How were young, single women able to navigate their new environment? This six-session course will examine the lives of the many Jewish women who arrived on the Lower East Side between 1870-1914. Through memoirs, letters and other historical material, you will explore the nature of life for Jewish women in Eastern Europe, the changes they faced after immigration, their work, family life and cultural adjustments.

Participants are invited to share their own cultural artifacts belonging to grandparents or great-grandparents to enrich our understanding of what life was like for immigrant women.

Lucy Shahar is a retired intercultural facilitator and consultant. She has worked extensively with immigrants, focusing on understanding and dealing with the cultural differences they encounter. Lucy has also taught US History, with an emphasis on immigration
