In a traditionally Orthodox congregation such as the one at Eldridge Street, separate seating is maintained for men and women. At Eldridge Street, the women's section is located on the balcony or gallery level. An area of the main sanctuary, set apart by a curtain (mechitza), would have been available for older women who had difficulty climbing the stairs.
