Every square inch of the sanctuary is covered with pattern, reflecting the Victorian aesthetic of Horror Vacui, or fear of unadorned spaces. The trompe l'oeil (trick-of-the-eye) murals to the left and right of the Ark represent curtained windows looking onto an idealized Jerusalem. Faux painting techniques used on the walls and columns dress up simple pine elements, giving the impression of a finer wood and marble.
