UNDERWAY: Current Phase The Eldridge Street Project
is currently overseeing a major phase of restoration that will bring modern heating,
cooling, ventilation and electrical systems to the building. As well, this phase
of restoration will make the Synagogue fully handicapped-accessible, and includes
the installation of ADA-compliant elevators, bathrooms, and an entry ramp. Significant
funding for this work is derived from the City of New York, who provided grants
totaling $2.9 million, in support of this phase of restoration, as well as numerous
foundations, corporations, and individuals. The following list describes this
work in more detail: - Introduction of modern
heating, air-conditioning, and ventilation system to control climate on all floors
- Plumbing
system upgrade on the cellar, first floor, and sanctuary
- Installation
of emergency fire stairs and other safety systems
- Restoration
of exterior masonry and terra cotta
- Restoration and
water-proofing of ceremonial stairs to the sanctuary level
- Restoration
of iron gates and front railings
- Completion of new
electrical wiring
- ADA-compliant, handicapped ramps
- Installation of an ADA-compliant elevator from cellar
to balcony levels
- Construction of ADA-compliant bathrooms
on cellar and first floor levels
- Archiving historical
artifacts including tefillin, prayer books and shawls, menorah, artwork, and other
precious materials, for future exhibition and academic research
