In 1913, a Jewish man, Mendel Beilis, living outside Kiev was brought to trial for murdering a 13-year-old Christian boy to use his blood in a religious ritual. The trial drew worldwide attention, and in the end Beilis was acquitted. After immigrating to America , Beilis died unknown and poor. His reputation was redeemed during a moving funeral at the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Acclaimed film director and producer Albert Maysles has been working on a film about Beilis for years. Join us for a panel discussion and mini screening with Maysles, historians Steven Zipperstein and Annie Polland, and English Professor Mark Mirsky.

A brilliant Talmudist and inspired orator, he was a prototype for the charismatic congregational leader of today. We pay tribute to him with personal memories by family members Edwin Margolius and Froma Zeitln, and talks by historians Annie Polland , Shuly Rubin Schwartz, and Rabbi Marc Margolius, Idelson’s great-nephew.
