ACADEMIC ANGLES

How did the Jews of the Lower East Side acclimate to their new country? How did they express themselves politically, socially and religiously? Leading scholars of American Jewish history use the Eldridge Street Synagogue as a springboard to speak about the adaptation and contributions of immigrant Jews in America .

Marilyn Chiat, Ph.D., surveys the history of the effort to preserve religious structures in the United States , and the issues related to their restoration and reuse. Particular emphasis will be placed on the restoration of the Eldridge Street Synagogue and B'nai Abraham Synagogue in Virginia, Minnesota. Free event

Wednesday, June 25 at 7pm


Explore the history of our melting-pot neighborhood through its musical roots at our annual Fest. This year’s concert highlights the drum – the world’s oldest and most ubiquitous instrument – and celebrates the multi-ethnic rhythms of the Lower East Side. Grammy award nominee and Latin jazz drummer Bobby Sanabria, and musicians from the klezmer, Italian and Puerto Rican traditions, will perform and share insights.

arrow  The Art of the Memoir—Summer Intensive
Four Tuesdays, July 1, 8, 15 & 22


Paul ZakrzewskiHow do you turn your story into one that others want to read about? Writer Paul Zakrzewski’s unique approach encourages you to experiment with different “voices” as a way of discovering your own range and style. Learn to analyze contemporary memoir and your own work. Weekly readings and writing assignments, as well as the chance to workshop your own short memoir.
Note: Initial assignment will be mailed out before the first class.

Art BaileyArt Bailey’s Orkestra Popilar brings fresh interpretations of rarely heard klezmer masterpieces originally recorded by Romanian-born tsimblist and Lower East Side restaurateur Joseph Moskowitz. Performing works featured on their recently released CD Branch From the Tree, Orkestra Popilar takes the listener on an exciting trip from the early roots of klezmer, up through the eclecticism of the current NYC music scene. Enjoy!

Thursday, July 24 from 1 to 4 pm


Folklorist Hanna Griff-Sleven leads this introductory program on how to research and record your family history. The workshop will teach basic interviewing techniques, help you craft questions that are specific to your family’s experience and explore how photographs, family recipes and heirlooms can illuminate your family history. We encourage multiple generations of a family to attend.

Start making sense of family names and roots! Learn how to research your own family genealogy on-line. Genealogist researcher Roger Lustig will guide you to appropriate websites and help you strategize the next step. Bring your shoebox of family ephemera, questions and dead ends.

Warren ByrdFounded in 1998 by Jewish American bassist David Chevan and African American pianist Warren Byrd, the Afro-Semitic Experience merges the music of their people into a jazzy worldbeat soundscape that is at once playful and reverent. Imagine Charles Mingus sitting in with a klezmer band. A whoopin', hollerin', testifyin' celebration of multicultural soul music.
