The Jew on Trial Conversation
with Albert Maysles
FREE

Mendel Beilis In 1913, a Jewish man, Mendel Beilis, living outside Kiev was brought to trial for murdering a 13-year-old Christian boy to use his blood in a religious ritual. The trial drew worldwide attention, and in the end Beilis was acquitted. After immigrating to America , Beilis died unknown and poor. His reputation was redeemed during a moving funeral at the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Acclaimed film director and producer Albert Maysles has been working on a film about Beilis for years. Join us for a panel discussion and mini screening with Maysles, historians Steven Zipperstein and Annie Polland, and English Professor Mark Mirsky.
