The scribal arts have a very important role in both Jewish and Chinese cultures. Award-winning calligrapher Guan Zu Yuan demonstrates the ancient art of Chinese writing. Watch his brush and discover surprising moods and emotions. He will work right next to Rabbi Zelig Mandel, a certified sofer (scribe), who creates, inspects and repairs Torah scrolls, tefillin and mezuzot. Jewish tradition tells us that after Moses received the Torah on Mount Sinai, he was taught how to inscribe the letters by God directly, a practice that has been passed down to our generation.
