Love and Courtship – Lower East Side Walking Tour
August 13 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm$25.00
How did people meet and mingle 100 years ago? Did they confess their love in letters? Go to a matchmaker? Meet at work on a factory floor? Bring someone special and join us for our Love and Courtship Lower East Side walking tour and find out. Maybe sparks will fly for you, too!
As a neighborhood full of immigrants wrestling with new American ways, the Lower East Side was host to family-arranged marriages as well as dance halls where young people mixed freely and made their own matches. On our Love & Courtship tour, we’ll visits sites where love once blossomed, including the former site of a popular dance hall on Grand Street, Seward Park and Seward Park Library, as well as bustling streets, stoops and shops.
Hear accounts from 19th- and early 20th-century novels, newspapers and a Yiddish love-letter writing manual that draw a vivid portrait of turn-of-the-century wooing, love and marriage. We end back at the Eldridge Street Synagogue for a beer and wine reception in our beautiful sanctuary.
Space is limited on this tour. Reservations required.
